Emergency Medicine Education for Health Care Professionals
The Division of Acute Care Surgery, Trauma and Surgical Critical Care at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) is dedicated to providing the highest level of trauma care available to patients. As a Level I Trauma Center, we are equipped to provide emergency treatment to patients as a result of trauma, an accident or sudden illness, regardless of the severity of the injury. Our multidisciplinary team of experienced surgeons, nurses and support staff are dedicated to providing patients with leading-edge care.
In addition to providing emergency medicine, our team is also committed to preventing injuries and accidents. We offer injury-prevention presentations, as well as education and training courses for emergency medical service providers, nursing professionals and physicians. By providing resources and educating health care providers and members of the community, we hope to prevent injury and guide emergency care for better patient outcomes.
Lectures for Emergency Medical Service Personnel & Colleagues
Offered throughout the year in various communities, we offer credit-eligible lectures about trauma management, including case reviews, for EMS personnel and colleagues at our referring facilities.
This continuing medical education (CME) course teaches a systematic, concise approach to the early care of the trauma patient. This course is vital to guiding care for the injured patient in emergency department trauma rooms. ATLS course training provides a common language that can save lives in critical situations. Participants' training is enhanced by the availability of BIDMC's Carl J. Shapiro Simulation and Skills Center, a state-of-the art facility offering the latest advances in medical simulation technology.
This program is designed to increase clinical reasoning skills of nurses who work with injured patients anywhere along the trauma continuum of care, particularly in the post-resuscitation phase. TCAR provides training on how to improve patient outcomes and fulfill regulatory requirements.
This two-day course provides nurses with the fundamental knowledge and skills required for trauma nursing. Like the ATLS course for physicians described above, the resources of BIDMC's Carl J. Shapiro Simulation and Skills Center provide course participants with a unique learning opportunity.
The International Emergency Medicine Program at BIDMC strives to promote the growth of academic programs and clinical excellence in Emergency Medicine worldwide. The Division of International Disaster and Emergency Medicine (DIDEM) works with a broad spectrum of international partners to build local capacity for emergency medical care delivery and disaster medical response around the world, advance the specialties of disaster and emergency medicine worldwide, and provide high-level continuing medical education for the international medical community.
Trauma Surgery and Emergency Medicine have combined teaching conferences and sponsor fellowships in Acute Care Surgery, Trauma, and Surgical Critical Care, providing strong clinical and academic training to surgeons seeking to emerge as leaders in the field. We accept one one-year Surgical Critical Care (SCC) fellow and one two-year Acute Care Surgery (ACS) fellow per year.
