Global Orthopaedic Health Initiative

Global Orthopaedic Health Initiative

The Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) Orthopaedic Health Program aims to improve access to musculoskeletal care for under-resourced communities around the world. The first initiative of its kind at BIDMC, the program unites the Orthopaedic Department's surgeons and researchers, as well as other Harvard-affiliated and non-affiliated resources, to develop innovative orthopedic and trauma solutions that are affordable and sustainable.

Two-way research and education

The Orthopaedic Health Program follows a framework of research and education. This begins by working with local surgeons to understand their situation, their challenges, how they have addressed these challenges, and whether the interventions in place to improve care are effective. Then the program develops an academic collaboration to support research and education — an exchange of ideas in both directions.

Program Leadership

The BIDMC Global Orthopaedic Health Initiative is headed by Kiran Agarwal-Harding, MD, MPH, who holds a master's from the T.H. Chan School of Public Health and completed a hand and upper extremity fellowship at New York-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center.
