Orthopedic Services to Help You Manage Pain and Heal

An injury or condition that affects your bones or muscles can prevent you from taking part in daily activities. At Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC), our orthopedic experts treat and manage common and complex conditions, from sports injuries to cancer.

The Department of Orthopedics offers a full range of orthopedic care, including pain management and rehabilitation. You can get care close to home at one of our nine locations. Before your appointment, learn how to prepare and what to expect at your orthopedic evaluation.

Conditions We Treat

Our orthopedic team diagnoses and treats a wide range of orthopedic disorders, illnesses and injuries, from muscle pain to traumatic injuries. These include acute fractures, sprains, strains and chronic conditions. We treat many conditions, including the following:

More About Orthopedics

Diagnosis & Imaging

To understand the cause of your condition, your doctor may use several musculoskeletal (MSK) diagnostic tests. These may include radiologic imaging tests.

At BIDMC, we also use interventional radiology to treat some orthopedic conditions, such as joint disorders and pain. This technique allows your doctor to use specialized imaging to ensure precision for joint aspiration or an injection of pain medicines or stem cells to treat your condition.

Nonsurgical Treatments

After making a diagnosis, your doctor will create a care plan for you. We use nonsurgical treatments first to help manage your pain. Options include:

  • Hand therapy: Your physical therapist teaches you specialized exercises for your hand. This helps you regain dexterity, mobility, and strength after an injury or surgery.
  • Injections for pain relief: Cortisone (corticosteroid) shots target joint inflammation and reduce pain.
  • Integrative care techniques: Your care team may prescribe acupuncture, massage, or other therapies like yoga to help reduce your pain and symptoms.
  • Medicine: Non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory medicines can help ease your pain.
  • Occupational therapy: Your occupational therapist shows you new ways to complete regular tasks. You use exercises to increase strength and mobility so you can complete daily activities.
  • Physical therapy: Our physical therapists work with you to improve your mobility with strengthening and stretching exercises. This can relieve stress on joints and help reduce pain.

If these treatment options do not reduce your pain or other symptoms, your doctor may consider surgical treatment.

Orthopedic Trauma Care

BIDMC is a Level 1 Trauma Center. We are equipped to handle all types of musculoskeletal trauma 24/7.

We provide specialized orthopedic trauma care and surgical services. When you come to BIDMC with a traumatic injury, care begins in the Emergency Department. Our trauma team stabilizes your orthopedic emergency and diagnoses your condition. If you need surgery, you receive care in our advanced trauma operating facilities.

We monitor your care in the hospital until you are well enough to go home or transfer to a rehabilitation center.
