More About Neuromuscular Disorders
Symptoms resulting from neuromuscular disease can occur with other illnesses. That’s why it’s important to see an experienced neurologist for your care. Making an accurate diagnosis is the first step in determining your care plan.
Your neurologist may use one or more of the following neurologic tests to diagnose your neuromuscular disorder:
- A physical exam, including blood testing and possible collection of spinal fluid
- Imaging studies, such as MRI or X-rays
- Nerve conduction studies, which measure how signals travel through nerves
- Electromyography (EMG), which measures electrical activity in muscle
- Specialized neuromuscular junction testing, including single fiber EMG
- Nerve and muscle biopsy
- Neuromuscular ultrasound
- Autonomic testing and skin biopsy
Giving you compassionate, high quality care is our top priority. We provide expert diagnostic, therapeutic and supportive services. This includes access to innovative clinical research studies and therapeutic trials.
Multidisciplinary ALS Clinic
BIDMC’s multidisciplinary ALS clinic offers convenient access to a wide variety of specialty providers.
Botulinum Toxin (Botox) Therapy
If you have spasticity (muscle tightness) or sialorrhea (drooling) related to your neuromuscular disease, your care team may recommend Botox treatment. These injections can improve your muscle control.
