Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
Neurosurgeons at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) provide comprehensive care for people with a broad range of disorders affecting the brain and spine. If you need a higher level of specialized care, you may spend time in our Neuroscience ICU.
Understanding Intensive Care
The Neuroscience ICU is a dedicated, inpatient unit providing multidisciplinary specialized care for people who need intensive care and monitoring. They may have certain neurological conditions such as:
- Ruptured brain aneurysm (subarachnoid hemorrhage)
- Brain and spinal cord tumors
- Stroke
- Seizures
- Traumatic brain injury (TBI)
- Complex medical care needs after neurosurgery
Advanced Technology
Our Neuroscience ICU features the latest advanced technology to monitor and manage your care:
- Bedside brain imaging with mobile CT scanners
- 24-hour monitoring of brain activity with video electroencephalogram (EEG)
- 24-hour monitoring of brain activity with continuous video electroencephalography (cvEEG)
- 24-hour advanced brain imaging (Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Computed Tomography (CT), and others)
- Intracranial pressure and oxygen monitoring
- Electromyography (EMG) and Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS)
- Invasive and non-invasive ventilatory support (breathing machines)
Comprehensive Critical Care Team
Your Neuroscience ICU team will include specialists from throughout BIDMC dedicated to your recovery. Depending on your needs, your care team may include some combination of these or other specialists:
- Critical care doctors with specialized neurological expertise (neurointensivists)
- Neurologists with expertise in stroke, brain tumors (neuro-oncology) and epilepsy
- Neurocritical care fellows and neurology residents (doctors-in-training)
- Dedicated neuroscience nurses
- Advanced practice providers (physician’s assistants and nurse practitioners)
- Dedicated neurocritical care pharmacist
- Respiratory therapists
- Rehabilitation specialists (physical, occupational, and speech therapists)
- Social workers, chaplains and case managers
What to Expect
A large team of specialized critical care clinicians with neurological expertise will immediately be involved in your care. Your neuroscience ICU nurse will help to orient you and your loved ones to the unit, and you will meet your team of neuroscience clinical experts who will explain and implement your plan of care.
