Stroke Rehabilitation & Recovery

Expert stroke recovery and physical therapy program

World-Class Stroke Rehabilitation

Stroke care specialists at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) provide expert care for all types of strokes. Recovery from stroke is often a long — sometimes lifelong — process. Recovery depends on which area of the brain the stroke affected and how much brain tissue the stroke damaged. The experts at BIDMC are here for you and your family each step of the way.

Post-Stroke Complications

Stroke complications can include these conditions:

  • Behavior changes
  • Pain
  • Paralysis or loss of muscle movement
  • Problems with memory or judgment
  • Trouble talking or swallowing

Your individualized stroke recovery plan — or that of your loved one — focuses on helping regain function in the areas that the stroke affected.

Life After a Stroke

After a stroke, there is a lot you can do to prevent another stroke and improve your recovery. Here's important information for you, your family, and your caregivers:

Hebrew Rehabilitation Center (HBC)

BIDMC has a network of community partners that includes Hebrew SeniorLife. Hebrew Rehabilitation Center (HRC) — with locations in Boston and at NewBridge on the Charles in Dedham — is an integral part of Hebrew SeniorLife. HRC offers post-acute and long-term care services at both locations.

If you or your loved one needs expert medical care and rehab services after a stroke, you can choose HRC for post-acute care. There, you’ll receive up to three hours of skilled therapy services per day and have access to specialized technology. Our stroke rehab team revolves around you and your family, setting short- and long-term goals for recovery.

HRC holds accreditation from the Commission on the Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF). This means that you can be confident that our programs meet internationally recognized standards and focus on quality and consumer satisfaction. HRC has received CARF's highest rating.
