Stroke Rehabilitation & Recovery
Expert stroke recovery and physical therapy program
World-Class Stroke Rehabilitation
Stroke care specialists at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) provide expert care for all types of strokes. Recovery from stroke is often a long — sometimes lifelong — process. Recovery depends on which area of the brain the stroke affected and how much brain tissue the stroke damaged. The experts at BIDMC are here for you and your family each step of the way.
Post-Stroke Complications
Stroke complications can include these conditions:
- Behavior changes
- Pain
- Paralysis or loss of muscle movement
- Problems with memory or judgment
- Trouble talking or swallowing
Your individualized stroke recovery plan — or that of your loved one — focuses on helping regain function in the areas that the stroke affected.
Recovery After Stroke: What to Expect
The goal of stroke rehabilitation is to improve your quality of life and restore as much independence as possible. Our neurologists can help plan your rehab program, which is likely to include a team of medical professionals. Your recovery plan focuses on the following areas:
- Cognitive skills to improve your memory and problem-solving abilities
- Occupational therapy to help you in everyday tasks such as eating and dressing
- Physical therapy to help you regain as much movement as possible
- Speech therapy to improve swallowing and speech problems
- Stroke support group
