First Seizure Program

Care planning after your first seizure

First Seizure Clinic at BIDMC

A seizure can be one of the scariest medical events you can experience or witness. So many questions arise when a person who has never had seizures before suddenly has one for the first time.

The Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) neurologists and the rest of the Epilepsy Center team are here for you and your family.

World-Class Epilepsy Care, Close to Home

The Epilepsy Center at BIDMC has earned a level 4 designation — the highest level that the National Association of Epilepsy Centers offers. With this, you can be assured that we are committed to upholding the highest standards of quality in patient care and outcomes.

What To Expect During Your First Visit

If you or a loved one has had their first seizure, come to our First Seizure Clinic for trusted, comprehensive care. You’ll receive a thorough evaluation, complete explanations and a thoughtful plan of action after having a seizure for the first time.

At your first visit with us, you’ll meet with one of our epileptologists. This is a neurologist who has extensive training and experience in treating seizures. You’ll also meet with our nurse specialists.

Diagnostic Testing

You have access to our latest diagnostic testing:

  • Brain MRI
  • Electroencephalogram, or EEG (measures your brain’s electrical activity)

These tests may tell your care team about the cause of your seizures. However, in my cases, we can’t determine the cause. The results of these tests also help us to estimate how likely it is that you may have another seizure.

Using Anti-Seizure Medications

We’ll use your test results to determine if taking anti-seizure medication may be helpful for you. Many people don’t get any treatment after a single seizure. If you have an elevated risk of future seizures, your specialist may recommend starting an anti-seizure medication.
