X-Ray & Fluoroscopy

Support for accurate diagnosis of many health conditions

Supporting Your Care with High Quality X-Ray Testing

Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) radiologists offer the latest in X-ray and fluoroscopy. Your doctor may send you for one of these tests to help them diagnose a variety of health concerns.

Understanding X-Ray & Fluoroscopy

Medical X-rays can image and identify bony and soft tissue structures. Diagnostic X-ray is the most common use of the test. This examines the body using either radiographs (still images) or fluoroscopy (real-time images). Fluoroscopy uses X-rays with video cameras so it can visualize internal motion. Some X-ray exams require drinking or injection of a contrast material that will better outline structures on the image.

What to Do Before an X-Ray

Most X-rays don’t require special preparation. If you are undergoing an X-ray test that does require preparation, your doctor will let you know ahead of time what to expect. How long the X-ray takes and what to expect afterwards depends on the area of the body the X-ray is imaging and other factors.

The doctor who ordered the X-ray will discuss the results with you. You can also access your X-ray images through your patient portal.
