At Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC), you can receive the highest quality care for all types of digestive diseases and conditions. Our gastroenterologists and other physicians offer expertise in many different specialties. Together, our combined experience means you get exceptional care for prevention, diagnosis and treatment.
With dedicated specialty centers, extensive support services and innovative clinical trials, we provide you with the very best in digestive care.
This is a partial list of the conditions we treat:
Your digestive system helps you get the nutrients you need to help your body work well and keep you healthy. It includes the luminal organs of your digestive tract — mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine (colon) and anus, along with your liver, pancreas and gallbladder.
Problems can develop in any of these organs causing a variety of symptoms. The symptoms may come on suddenly or develop more gradually. No matter what, they can be distressing.
If you have digestive symptoms that interfere with your quality of life, such as frequent gas, bloating or constipation, it's important to discuss them with your primary care provider. They can evaluate your symptoms and do diagnostic tests. They also can help you stay on track with screening tests, such as colonoscopy, which can find problems before you have symptoms. If necessary, they can refer you to one of our specialists.
If digestive symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting or diarrhea come on suddenly, but aren't severe, contact your provider or visit one of our urgent care locations.
When you’re having uncomfortable symptoms, you need answers. We provide you with the most up-to-date screening and diagnostic tools. Making a diagnosis quickly helps you receive quick treatment.
Every person's condition is unique. We believe your treatment should be, too. Whether you're taking medications, need to make lifestyle changes or are scheduled for surgery, we have experts ready to provide the services you need.
Food and nutrition plays a role in role in many digestive disorders. Nutrition experts from our Nutritional Health Center are here to provide dietary counseling and help you make the food choices that are best for you. If you have celiac disease or gluten intolerance, this includes education on a gluten-free diet.
Our surgeons are skilled in all types of GI surgery, including minimally invasive procedures. We do these procedures though natural body openings and small incisions. For you, the surgeries typically result in less pain, shorter hospital stays and a quicker recovery. Laparoscopic techniques can be particularly helpful for treating achalasia and hernias.
Practical and emotional support can go a long way toward helping you heal. You’ll find it through our Behavioral Health team and social workers.
Your digestive health team coordinates your care with other specialty providers throughout our medical center. This ensures you receive comprehensive, streamlined care.
