Joint Replacement

Surgery to reduce pain, restore mobility

Expert Care When You Need Joint Replacement Surgery

Living with pain in your joints — hip, knee or shoulder — can limit your ability to do the activities you love. At Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) in Boston, MA, we provide joint replacement surgery when non-surgical orthopedic treatments are no longer effective in managing your symptoms.

Our Division of Joint Replacement Surgery experts use advanced, minimally invasive surgical techniques to give you the best care. We offer same-week appointments at convenient locations to quickly get you back on your feet.

What Is Joint Replacement Surgery?

Joint replacement procedures reduce pain and restore movement to damaged joints. During joint replacement surgery your doctor removes damaged cartilage and bone. A ceramic, metal or plastic joint prosthesis is implanted into the joint space.

A partial joint replacement restores either the ball joint or the socket. A full joint replacement replaces the ball joint and the socket with man-made implants.

BIDMC surgeons use image-guided technology during surgery to ensure precise placement of the artificial joint. This improves the new joint’s ability to replicate the normal movements of a healthy joint. Your ligaments, muscles and tendons are not cut during surgery, allowing you to recover quickly.

What Causes Joint Damage?

Aging, arthritis, overuse, sports injuries, and trauma can all damage joints. The ankles, elbows, hips, knees, shoulders, and wrists can all experience damage.

Joint pain is usually caused by bone rubbing on bone. This occurs when the cartilage that normally cushions the bone is damaged, torn, or worn away. Joint replacement surgery helps manage joint pain.

Types of Joint Replacements We Offer

At BIDMC, we provide:

  • Partial and total hip replacement.
  • Partial and total knee replacement.
  • Shoulder replacement.
  • Revision surgery after joint replacement.
