Supporting BIDMC’s Academic Mission

The Carl J. Shapiro Institute for Education and Research at Harvard Medical School and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) was established in 1996 through the collaborative vision of Dr. Daniel C. Tosteson, then Dean of Harvard Medical School, and Dr. Mitchell T. Rabkin, then President of Beth Israel Hospital, with the generous support of Mr. Carl J. Shapiro.

The Shapiro Institute supports the academic missions of Harvard Medical School and BIDMC, focusing on training the next generation of physicians, advancing medical research and developing educational methodologies that have a global impact.

The Shapiro Institute is committed to:

  • Training Future Physicians: Supporting the education of medical students, residents, fellows and other trainees through innovative programs.
  • Innovative Research: Promoting “bench to bedside” research, translating laboratory discoveries into clinical applications.
  • Educational Leadership: Developing curricula and programs that are adopted by medical schools and academic medical centers worldwide.
  • Global Influence: Extending the reach of academic medical centers through continuing education courses, fellowship programs and research initiatives.
