Resident Life & Wellness

The cornerstone of our residency program at BIDMC is our residents. A strong sense of camaraderie flourishes both in and out of work. During lunch breaks, residents often gather together, enjoying meals outside on “the steps” when the weather permits.

Socializing extends beyond the hospital, with wellness events and gatherings at each other’s homes, including summer barbecues, after-work happy hours, and exciting outings to Red Sox games at Fenway Park—where employees can snag tickets for just $5.

Living in Boston

Boston, Massachusetts, is an exhilarating place to spend your residency. Known as an international "university town," Boston boasts a diverse population that includes native Bostonians and scholars from across the globe. This vibrant community is welcoming and rich in culture and history, offering countless opportunities for weekend exploration. With close proximity to ski slopes, hiking trails in New Hampshire and Vermont, and the stunning beaches of Cape Cod and Rhode Island, there's always something to do.

BIDMC is nestled in the Longwood Medical and Academic Area, surrounded by premier academic hospitals like Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Joslin Diabetes Center, and Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Our affiliation with Harvard Medical School further enhances the educational environment, with the campus just a short walk away.

Boston's historic neighborhoods create a charming backdrop for residency life. You can enjoy a run along the Charles River, explore eclectic bookstores, and indulge in world-class dining—all within an afternoon.

Most residents choose to live in vibrant neighborhoods such as Fenway, Brookline, and Jamaica Plain, while others appreciate the stylish flats of Back Bay, the Victorian charm of Brookline, or the family-friendly atmosphere of Newton. Cambridge, home to Harvard University and MIT, is also a popular destination for both living and visiting.
