Neonatology Medical Student Education

Advancing the Future of Neonatology

Welcome to the BIDMC Department of Neonatology’s page for medical student education. Here, we focus on helping students learn about newborn care in a hands-on and collaborative way. As part of Harvard Medical School, our expert faculty offer great educational opportunities for medical students, neonatology fellows, and other healthcare professionals.

Our Approach to Education

At BIDMC, we believe in working together to care for newborns. This means that medical students, fellows, and other professionals learn from each other and from our Harvard Medical School faculty. Our goal is to provide a rich and interactive learning experience.

Clinical Training through Harvard Medical School

We offer several training opportunities through Harvard Medical School:

  • HMS-II Students: Take part in a half-day introduction to newborn care as part of the Patient-Doctor II course. This session gives you basic knowledge and hands-on experience with newborns.
  • HMS-III Students: Complete a 5-day rotation in the newborn nursery. This gives you practical experience in a clinical setting and helps you improve your newborn care skills.
  • HMS-IV Students: Participate in a month-long elective subinternship in the newborn intensive care unit (NICU). This rotation provides in-depth exposure to advanced neonatal care and management.

Other Educational Activities

We also:

  • Guide Neonatal Nurse Practitioners:  We offer training and support for neonatal nurse practitioners.
  • Teach Obstetrics/Gynecology and Anesthesiology Residents:  We cover topics related to newborn care.
  • Work with Maternal and Child Health:  We collaborate with the Department of Maternal and Child Health at Harvard School of Public Health, taking on roles as lecturers, course directors, and thesis advisors.

Additional Educational Efforts

Our faculty also:

  • Teach and Tutor: Provide instruction in various Harvard Medical School courses.
  • Speak at Events: Present at local and national conferences.
  • Mentor: Offer guidance to students, nurse practitioners, and house staff.
  • Educate Parents: Focus on teaching parents about newborn care as part of our mission.
