Newborn Care Specialists

The Department of Neonatology provides highly skilled medical care for all infants born at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC). These experts provide and coordinate care — such as high-frequency ventilation and a full range of pediatric subspecialty services — for high-risk newborns in the newborn intensive care unit (NICU) and intermediate care unit.

What Is a Neonatologist?

Neonatologists are pediatricians who have additional training in the special care of newborns, especially those with complex medical needs. Here at BIDMC, board-certified neonatologists are on-site 24 hours a day. We provide the full range of neonatal care:

  • Care for babies with special health needs. BIDMC neonatologists provide care in the Children’s Hospital NICU and several community hospital special-care nurseries.
  • Collaborate with maternal-fetal medicine (MFM) for high-risk pregnancy care. We work with MFM specialists to provide comprehensive, high-risk antepartum care and counseling.
  • Hospital care for healthy newborns. Our department staff is available to care for healthy newborns whose primary pediatric providers don't have privileges at our medical center. That means if your baby's pediatrician doesn't have privileges at BIDMC, rest assured your baby is in good hands if you choose to deliver here.

Referral to Neonatology

If your pregnancy is considered high risk, your provider may arrange for you to meet with one of our neonatologists. Our neonatologists and high-risk obstetricians collaborate closely to ensure that the NICU team is aware of all women who may deliver babies that require specialty care.

Highest Level of NICU Care

Our NICU holds the highest level of specialized neonatal care available. We care for the sickest babies and those born very early. We also provide well-rounded supportive services for families during your baby's NICU stay, as you prepare to go home and care for your baby at home after they are discharged from the NICU.

When you choose BIDMC for labor and delivery, you can rest assured that we offer the highest level of specialized neonatal care around the clock on-site. Our expert, multidisciplinary team is here to provide compassionate care to your family.
