Carl J. Shapiro Institute for Education and Research

The Carl J. Shapiro Institute for Education and Research provides intellectual leadership, state-of-the-art facilities, faculty and staff resources to support the education and training of medical students, residents, fellows, and other trainees.

The mission of the Carl J. Shapiro Institute for Education and Research at Harvard Medical School and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center is to support, promote, and develop innovative programs and models for the dual activities of teaching and conducting research at academic medical centers.

In 1996 Daniel C. Tosteson, MD, then Dean of Harvard Medical School, and Mitchell T. Rabkin, MD, then President of Beth Israel Hospital, cofounded the Carl J. Shapiro Institute for Education and Research. Dedicated to innovation in medical education, the Institute provides intellectual leadership, state-of-the-art facilities, faculty and staff resources to support the education and training of medical students, residents, fellows, and other trainees.

On a broader scale, the Institute fosters the mission of academic medical centers around the country and throughout the world via its continuing medical education courses and fellowship offerings, Millennium Conferences, and its education research programs.
