Neurology Continuing Medical Education & Training
Education & Training Programs in Neurology
The Department of Neurology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) provides comprehensive, leading-edge care to patients with neurological disorders, from common conditions to complex diseases. BIDMC Neurology is a group of more than 70 neurologists, neuroscientists and other medical professionals whose main focus is treating all forms of diseases affecting the nervous system, from brain to muscle. The department offers a range of programs and clinics including the Epilepsy Program, Multiple Sclerosis Clinic, Parkinson's Disease & Movement Disorders Center and more.
Faculty also conduct basic and clinical research, and offer many teaching programs for medical students, residents and fellows. BIDMC Neurology is committed to providing continuing education and professional development programs to foster neurological science and prepare future leaders in the field while providing the best possible individualized care to patients today.
Neurology Education & Programs
Taught by neurologists from Harvard Medical School, the Movement Disorders: Current Concepts and Practice course is filled with videos and clinical pearls, with plenty of opportunities to ask questions to experienced faculty.
Education is an important aspect of the Berenson-Allen Center for Noninvasive Brain Stimulation mission. As the proliferation of non-invasive stimulatory and modulatory technologies spreads across clinical and academic settings, BIDMC Neurology feels it's important practitioners keep up to date on emerging research and methodologies. As such, the department has developed classes intended to aid in the training of emerging specialists and skill-maintenance of long-time practitioners.
Classes combine formal lectures with ample hands-on exposure and methodological practice. All courses are run in conjunction with Harvard Medical School and provide Continuing Medical Education (CME) credits for practicing physicians.

Intensive Course in Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)
The 5-day intensive course in Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is offered three times per year. The course provides a unique opportunity for hands-on learning of the basic principles, standards of use and potential applications of TMS in clinical neurophysiology, cognitive neuroscience, neurology and psychiatry.
The course is conducted in small groups of up to 24 participants with formal educational sessions and ample practical exposure. At the end of the course, participants will have learned and directly experienced how to:
- Determine motor threshold
- How to conduct cortical mapping
- Silent period
- Unput-output curve
- Paired-pulse TMS studies
- How to safely apply repetitive TMS
Participants will have also learned how to design TMS studies, write TMS protocols and interpret findings of TMS studies. This course is limited to 24 participants per session.
Introduction to Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) Course
Transcranial Current Stimulation (tCS) is an approach to noninvasive brain stimulation with strong potentiality in the field of medical and neuroscientific research. Its first and most widely used representative, transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS), was first established in neuroscience research in the 1950s and 60s, but has seen rapid growth particularly in the last five years.
The 3-day Transcranial Current Stimulation (tCS) course aims to familiarize participants with the fundamentals of the theoretical and practical aspects of tCS and to continue education and professional development.
The theoretical considerations include lectures on safety, mechanisms of action and previous application in research settings. The practical considerations include sessions on device set-up and parameters for experimental utilization. Regulatory aspects of the use of tCS in research, with a particular focus on tDCS, is also addressed.
BIDMC Neurology has been dedicated to providing local physicians and stroke-care providers with medical education in best practices in stroke diagnosis and treatment. Additionally, faculty assist affiliated hospitals in providing stroke education and support to patients and their families.
Through the BIDMC TeleNet:Stroke service, participating community hospitals have around-the-clock access to direct and immediate video consultation with BIDMC stroke neurology specialists. The BIDMC stroke team can consult with emergency physicians and local neurologists, and examine patients from afar, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Using image-sharing technology and video conferencing, BIDMC specialists visually assess, talk with, and review scans for patients who may be experiencing acute stroke, transient ischemic attacks or stroke-like conditions.
The TeleNet:Stroke program facilitates rapid diagnosis and triage so that patients with stroke or suspected stroke receive the most appropriate therapy in the most appropriate location as quickly as possible.
