Professional Development in Medical Education

Led by Director Huma Farid, MD, the mission of the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) Academy is to enhance and foster the educational development of physicians, scientists, clinicians and other healthcare professionals throughout the BIDMC community.

The Academy works to enhance the educational expertise of BIDMC faculty so they may provide the best educational experiences possible for learners across the medical education continuum.

By offering an array of professional development programs and offerings, The Academy strives to promote and recognize the faculty's excellence and innovation in medical education. These include:

  • Teaching skill development workshops and conferences
  • Opportunities to collaborate and seek assistance from professionally-trained medical educators
  • Individualized designed teaching consultations
  • Mentoring in academic medicine
  • Medical education grand rounds
  • Guidance in medical education research
  • Participation in a community of clinician-educators who strive for excellence in academic medicine

Faculty Professional Development

The BIDMC Academy expands upon current departmental offerings in professional development, and co-sponsors educational activities with the Harvard Medical School (HMS) Academy and academies at other HMS-affiliated hospitals. The Academy supports faculty professional development by:

  • Recognizing and supporting a community of faculty educators dedicated to promoting and practicing teaching excellence across the continuum of medical education
  • Fostering the careers of those interested in becoming educators in medicine and science
  • Providing resources and programming to develop and enhance high-quality teaching skills
  • Stimulating and supporting the creation and implementation of innovative approaches to learning and assessment, including research and scholarship
BIDMC Academy Requirements

Below are the requirements for membership to BIDMC Academy:

  • Requirement for prospective membership (i.e., under consideration for membership): Faculty, fellows, PGY3+ residents and all other healthcare professionals must participate in a minimum number of Academy-only activities or services within a single academic year. The requirements are 6 hours for faculty and 3 hours for PGY3+ trainees and other healthcare professionals.
  • Requirement for continued membership: Must participate in a minimum of 6 hours of HMS-associated professional development activities every academic year, of which 1 hour/year must be a BIDMC Academy activity.
Examples of BIDMC Academy Activities

Some examples of Academy-only activities, with hours of credit in parentheses, include:

  • BIDMC Academy Annual Retreat (3 hours)
  • Monthly professional development sessions (1.0-1.5 hours)
  • Master Teacher observation (2 hours)
  • Peer observation of teaching (2 hours)
  • 1-on-1 consultation (1 hour)
  • Curriculum Vitae clinic (1 hour)
  • Leading any of the above (1-3 hours, depending on the activity)
Examples of HMS-Associated Professional Development Activities

HMS-associated professional development activities are defined as HMS, HMS-affiliate or BIDMC “teaching about teaching” or “learning about teaching” activities. These include:

  • Attending an HMS Academy event, activity or symposium (e.g., medical education grand rounds)
  • Leading or attending a BIDMC department-based faculty development program
  • Presenting a poster at HMS Medical Education Day

Please note that all activities must be local with the purpose to enhance teaching excellence. Not counted are CME courses, talks or conferences directed at clinical topics, regional or national faculty development activities associated with academic societies, HMS Academy Interest Group meetings, or clinical teaching or mentoring of medical students, resident, fellows or faculty.
