The Infectious Diseases team at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) provides consultation when you are hospitalized or when you need outpatient care for conditions caused by an infection. Infections are conditions caused by microscopic organisms such as bacteria, fungi, parasites or viruses.

Conditions We Treat

We commonly treat the following conditions:

  • Acute and chronic bacterial and viral diseases
  • Chronic infections, including HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis C
  • Endocarditis, an infection of the heart’s inner lining caused by bacteria, fungi or other germs 
  • Surgical site infections
  • Orthopedic infections
  • Infections in patients with suppressed immune systems caused by the following:

When you have a chronic infectious disease or are living with a compromised immune system, you want care that keeps you healthy. The infectious diseases team at BIDMC is here for you. Your doctor works with you to create a care plan that prevents ongoing infection.

If you received care in the hospital, you can continue to see the same doctors for as long as you are affected by the original infection.

  • Consultation for hematologic malignancies and benign hematologic conditions with chronic immunosuppression
  • Consultation for pre- and post-stem cell transplant
  • Management and prevention of solid organ transplant-related infections
  • Comprehensive management of HIV, including those in end-stage renal and end-stage liver disease in need of transplantation
  • Medication management for the prevention of HIV infection 
  • Management of infections during pregnancy
  • Management of infections if you have a ventricular assist device while awaiting a heart transplant
  • Medication management for the prevention of HIV infection
  • Pre- and post-transplant vaccination strategies to prevent infection if you are immunosuppressed
