The Division of Infectious Diseases at BIDMC provides world-class consultative services to hospitalized and non-hospitalized patients with infectious diseases, both routinely as well as in emergencies. We also offer routine follow-ups for antibiotic management.
Our expert physicians provide care for:
- Chronic infections, including HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis C
- Acute and chronic bacterial and viral diseases
- Surgical site infections
- Infections in patients who are:
- Bone marrow and solid organ transplant recipients
- Undergoing chemotherapy
- Affected by diabetes
- In treatment for diseases that suppress the immune system
Care for HIV Positive Patients
Our team provides specialized care and advanced cardiovascular, kidney, liver, and oncology services for patients who are HIV positive.
Cardiovascular Medicine
The division maintains a close partnership with the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, providing care for a variety of heart conditions, including endocarditis and a dedicated Infectious Endocarditis Clinic.
Maternal-Fetal Medicine
Our team collaborates closely with the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine, providing specialized services for infectious diseases and pregnancy.
Transplant & Immunocompromised Services
The division offers consultative care for hospitalized and non-hospitalized patients facing infectious disease issues related to immunosuppression, supported by active research and clinical trials.
Our services include:
- Infectious disease consultations for pre- and post-stem cell transplantation, focusing on managing and preventing transplant-related infections.
- Vaccination strategies before and after transplantation to prevent infections in immunosuppressed patients.
- ID consultations for patients with hematologic malignancies and chronic immunosuppression, including support for the HIV autologous stem cell transplant program.
- Management of HIV in patients with end-stage renal and liver disease who need transplantation.
- Infection management for patients with ventricular assist devices awaiting heart transplants.

The division is home to research faculty whose interests span all aspects of the subspecialty including basic science, translational, and epidemiological research in HIV, influenza, herpesviruses, tuberculosis, hepatitis C, resistant bacteria, prosthetic joint infections, and endocarditis in addition to research in global health, antibiotic stewardship, health care epidemiology, QA/QUI, and medical education.
