As part of the Department of Medicine at BIDMC, the Division faculty and staff are also actively conducting bench to bedside research aimed at advancing the field of infectious disease medicine while translating discoveries into clinical practice for patient care. The Division conducts cutting-edge research in various important clinical and laboratory areas, including the AIDS Clinical Trial Group, HIV Transplantation Program, Faculty Clinical Research Profiles and Basic Investigators Research Profiles. Through innovative research, the Division is dedicated to improving infectious disease treatments and therapies to improve patient outcomes and seeks to train future leaders in Infectious Disease who excel in clinical care, research and education.

Clinical Research

Investigators conducting clinical research within the Division are dedicated to the prevention of infectious disease and the advancements of treatment and therapies to improve patient outcomes. The Division's clinical research includes:

  • Epidemiology of nosocomial infection
  • International HIV
  • HIV prevention
  • HIV transplant program
  • HIV-HPV coinfection

Basic Research

Investigators conducting basic laboratory research within the Division are focused on understanding the basic mechanisms of inflammation, immunology and virology of various infectious diseases to develop new immunotherapies and vaccines for patients. The Division's basic research includes:

  • The cellular and molecular bases of inflammation
    • Immunobiology of eosinophilic leukocytes
    • Intracellular regulation and compartmentalization of inducible mediators of inflammation in neutrophils and other leukocytes
  • Viral pathogenesis
