Advanced care for managing HIV/AIDS
If you are living with HIV/AIDS, you need ongoing care to manage your health. At Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC), we provide primary, infectious disease and specialty care for HIV. We create a personalized care plan to treat and manage your condition. At BIDMC, you can expect advanced care whether you've lived with HIV for a long time or are newly diagnosed.
HIV is the human immunodeficiency virus. The virus causes acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). HIV/AIDS weakens your ability to fight infections. The most common ways to get HIV are from unprotected sex or needle sharing with an infected person.
You can access a range of HIV screening and diagnostic services at BIDMC.
Through our primary care, gynecologic and urologic care teams, we offer HIV testing and additional services:
We use a gender-inclusive approach to care. We want everyone to feel comfortable as they seek the care they need.
You and your care team create a treatment plan that works for you. Our team provides a wide range of HIV services:
We also work closely with our primary care colleagues in Healthcare Associates (HCA) to offer supportive services that ensure you get all the care you need, such as:
At BIDMC, our primary care doctors offer a specialty HIV program for HIV-positive adults. As our patient, you get access to advanced treatments and new therapies. We lead HIV research and clinical trials. If you choose, you can take part in a trial.
BIDMC specialists also offer advanced care for individuals with HIV. Our HIV Care team through the Division of Infectious Diseases provides infectious disease and immunosuppression services to you in the hospital and on an outpatient basis.
When you have HIV/AIDS you are at increased risk for certain types of cancer, especially blood and bone marrow cancer. At BIDMC, we provide comprehensive screening and care to diagnose cancer early and begin treatment right away. If you do develop a blood or bone marrow cancer, your care team will work with you to create an HIV-specific care plan. In some cases, your doctor may recommend a stem cell transplant.
Living with HIV/AIDS means you are at increased risk for cardiovascular disease. Even when your HIV is under control with treatment, you may still develop high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes. Over time, this increases your risk for a heart attack, heart failure or stroke.
We understand the challenges that come with taking antiviral therapy while managing your heart health. Our care team helps you manage existing heart conditions such as coronary artery disease. We offer comprehensive care to reduce your risk of heart disease. Your heart doctor works with your primary care doctor, infectious disease specialist and pharmacist to personalize your medicines and treatments.
If you are pregnant or are considering becoming pregnant, our infectious disease and pregnancy specialists are here to help. We offer education and guidance before you get pregnant. It’s our goal to make sure you are as healthy as possible before you get pregnant. Throughout your pregnancy, we provide the care you need to achieve a healthy pregnancy and birth.
