Surgical treatment for ovarian cysts, endometriosis, fibroids and more
Some people wait to seek help for conditions like heavy menstrual periods, pelvic pain and other gynecologic-related issues. Symptoms from these conditions can affect your quality of life. There’s no need to wait to seek care.
The Division of Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) is here to help. We are skilled in treating these conditions.
Our entire care team takes the time to listen to your concerns, discuss your care options and provide you with the right guidance so we can build a care plan personalized to your needs.
We offer innovative surgical treatments. We focus on providing effective minimally invasive surgery options. Compared to traditional, open surgery with a larger incision, minimally invasive surgery typically offers these advantages:
Your care team will work with you to determine if you are a candidate for minimally invasive surgery.
We often treat these and other conditions with minimally invasive surgery:
BIDMC brings together different medical experts to offer several coordinated specialty care programs to address your gynecologic health:
Our specialists offer a wide variety of minimally invasive procedures, including:
Hysteroscopy is a procedure to examine the inside of the uterus (womb). The hysteroscope is a thin instrument with a camera lens and a light source. Your doctor places the hysteroscope into the vagina, through the cervix and into the uterus using specialized imaging. Once through the cervix, the camera can view the entire uterine cavity and evaluate any potential abnormalities.
There are some hysteroscopic procedures that your doctor can perform in the office. During the procedure, you can watch the surgeon’s progress on the TV monitor, if you wish.
Laparoscopy is a procedure that allows a surgeon to access the inside of the abdomen and pelvis without making large incisions. A laparoscope is a long lens with a small video camera and light source.
During the procedure, your doctor makes small incisions (cuts) in your abdomen, then inserts the laparoscope into an incision. We use a specialized viewing monitor to see inside the body and check for abnormalities.
Robotic surgery is another type of minimally invasive approach. In robotic surgery, we make a few small incisions — similar to laparoscopy. The robot and its instruments feature a magnified, 3D high-definition vision system and special, wristed instruments. These offer your doctor improved range of motion and surgical precision.
