Vulvar Care

Comprehensive care for conditions related to the vulva

Specialized Care for Vulvar Conditions

The Vulvar Clinic at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) provides comprehensive evaluation and treatment for conditions related to the vulva, or external genitalia. These include chronic (long-term) yeast infections, vaginitis, labial atrophy, pain during intercourse and more.

Some vulvar disorders can be difficult to diagnose. Therefore, it’s important to see a gynecologist who has extra training in this specialty.

We offer appointments in the Vulvar Clinic on two Monday afternoons per month, from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Speak with your gynecologist about an evaluation in our clinic, or contact us to schedule an appointment.

    • Lichen sclerosus (thin, white patches)
    • Lichen simplex chronicus (chronic itching)
    • Vulvar psoriasis (red patches)
  • Desquamative inflammatory vaginitis, which causes yellowish discharge, swelling and discomfort
  • Genital warts
  • Post-menopausal vulvar pain
  • Recurrent bacterial or yeast infections
  • Recurrent cysts in the Bartholin’s gland
  • Vaginismus, a muscle spasm in pelvic floor muscles
  • Vulvar/labial atrophy or post-menopausal atrophy (thinning and dryness)
  • Vulvar pain with intercourse
  • Vulvar ulcers
  • Vulvodynia or vestibulodynia, which causes chronic pain unrelated to an infection
  • Vulvar low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (LSIL) or high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL), which are precancerous cells of the vulva
