Expert Interventional Gynecologists

Interventional radiologists use imaging guidance — such as CT scan, X-Ray and ultrasound — to help us diagnose and treat various health conditions. Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) interventional radiologists use procedures to effectively treat and manage symptoms related to a number of gynecologic conditions.

Conditions We Treat

Our interventional radiologists offer procedures to treat a variety of conditions:

  • Chronic (long-term) pelvic pain
  • Fertility challenges, including fallopian tube recanalization (non-surgical procedure to remove blockages in the fallopian tubes)
  • Pelvic congestion syndrome (causes chronic pelvic pain)
  • Pelvic venous insufficiency (disorder in which pelvic veins cannot drain blood properly back to the heart)
  • Uterine adenomyosis Uterine fibroids

More About Interventional Gynecology

Endometrial Cryoablation

Your specialist may recommend this treatment option if you have endometriosis. Doctors commonly use this technique to destroy cancerous cells. However, it’s also effective at treating non-cancerous causes of pain like abdominal wall endometriosis.

Cryoablation uses extreme cold to freeze and destroy tissue. Your interventional radiologist uses a CT scan or ultrasound to guide the procedure. Interventional radiologists can perform image-guided cryoablation as an outpatient procedure. This means that you’ll go home the same day as the procedure.

Your interventional radiologist uses one or two needle punctures and no stitches. You should have a quick recovery and return to normal activities. You can expect a noticeable decrease in endometriosis symptoms, such as pain, soon after the procedure.

Uterine Artery Embolization (UAE)

Fibroids are the most common benign (noncancerous) uterine tumors. Interventional radiologists use uterine artery embolization (UAE) to treat fibroids. Another name for this treatment is uterine fibroid embolization (UFE). UAE is a minimally invasive treatment for fibroids without open surgery.

To begin the procedure, your interventional radiologist makes a pin-sized hole in your wrist or groin. Then, we insert a small catheter (long, thin tube) into the artery supplying blood to the fibroids. This works to reduce blood flow and shrink the fibroids.

You will be under conscious sedation during the procedure. This blocks your pain and allows you to remain comfortably awake without the potential risks of general anesthesia.

We have offered UAE for more than 20 years. Over 90% of those treated are satisfied with their results after the procedure. Research shows that UAE improves quality of life. You can expect to be back to your normal activity level in less than two weeks.
