More About Cardiac Surgery
In most cases, your heart or vascular care team will try less invasive treatment options before we recommend surgery. Our surgeons used advanced cardiac imaging to plan your treatment.
The multidisciplinary team within BIDMC's Aortic Center has achieved excellent outcomes in complex aortic surgeries. Our specialists perform a wide array of procedures:
- Aortic reconstruction
- Coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) or surgery
- Heart transplant
- Heart valve surgery
- Implantable device placement, including ventricular assist devices (VADs), MitraClip device and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) device
- Surgical repair of aortic aneurysms
- Stentless aortic valve replacement
- Thoracic aortic root surgery
- Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR)
Septal Myectomy
Septal myectomy is a surgical procedure to reduce the thickness of the heart muscle caused by HCM and to normalize blood flow. Septal myectomy can extend longevity and restore quality of life to those having severe symptoms of HCM.
The HCM surgical team works closely with experts from the Advanced Heart Failure Program, Cardiovascular Genetics Program and Arrhythmia Services to provide a coordinated and personalized approach to your HCM care.
Our interventional cardiologists are pioneers in developing minimally invasive cardiac surgery techniques for valve stenosis and regurgitation. These are other minimally invasive surgeries that we routinely perform:
- Aortic valve replacement
- Atrial septal defect (ASD) repair
- Patent foramen ovale (PFO) repair
- Coronary artery bypass grafting
- Maze surgery to correct atrial fibrillation (AFib)
