High Blood Pressure

Advanced care for complex high blood pressure, resistant hypertension and more

Expert Hypertension Care

The Complex Hypertension Clinic at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) provides comprehensive care for people with uncontrolled hypertension.

In collaboration with the Hypertension Center at Health Care Associates, the Complex Hypertension Clinic is specially designed to support patients who, despite treatment with multiple medications, have been unable to keep blood pressure under control. This can leave them at risk for stroke, heart attack and congestive heart failure.

Understanding Hypertension

Another term for hypertension is high blood pressure. Uncontrolled hypertension is a leading cause of heart and vascular disease. We developed our clinic in collaboration with the Hypertension Center at Healthcare Associates (HCA).

In addition, our Complex Hypertension Clinic supports people who — despite treatment with multiple medications — have been unable to keep their blood pressure under control. This can leave you at risk for these and other serious complications:

If you could benefit from our care, make your first appointment with our team.

Our Diagnostic Services

Evaluations often include 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring and remote home monitoring to measure blood pressure readings over time. These help your care team determine the source of the problem. For example, an undiagnosed medical condition such as sleep apnea or a hormonal disorder may be contributing to your rise in blood pressure.

Treatments for High Blood Pressure

Our doctors offer a range of tailored treatments to lower blood pressure. These include medication management, as well as diet and exercise plans.

At the Complex Hypertension Clinic, we also evaluate those who may benefit from renal artery stenting. This is a specialized procedure to open blocked renal arteries and restore blood flow.

Leading-Edge Treatment Option

The Complex Hypertension Clinic offers renal denervation, a minimally invasive procedure. The goal of this procedure is to calm excessively active nerves connected to the kidneys that may contribute to high blood pressure. You may be a candidate for this innovative procedure if you have resistant hypertension or you can't tolerate medications.

Dr. Eric Secemsky has been a leader in investigating this procedure through the SPYRAL AFFIRM Clinical Study. We are continuing to examine the long-term impact of renal denervation over time.

The Food and Drug Administration has approved the procedure as safe and effective in helping select people control their blood pressure. We continue to examine the long-term impact of renal denervation over time. Some people may have the chance to join a post-market approval clinical study.
