Comprehensive Electrophysiology Care
Electrophysiology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) has long been recognized for our pioneering and innovative role in the treatment of heart rhythm disorders. Our entire team works together to provide you with the most comprehensive electro cardiology care.
The CardioVascular Institute’s Electrophysiology Lab offers you the most advanced diagnosis and treatment methods — including non-surgical procedures — to control or cure a variety of arrhythmias. Arrhythmias are a group of heart conditions that cause an irregular heart rate.
What is an Electrophysiologist?
An electrophysiologist is a specialized cardiologist (heart doctor) who completed extra training in the electrical system of the heart.
Conditions We Diagnose & Treat
An electrophysiology cardiologist can promptly diagnose and expertly treat all types of arrhythmias:
- Atrial flutter fibrillation
- Conduction disturbance not diagnosable by electrocardiograms (ECG) alone
- Congenital (present at birth) or acquired (developed over time) arrhythmias
- Risk of cardiac arrest
- Supraventricular tachycardia
- Syncope (fainting)
- Undiagnosed palpitations
- Ventricular tachycardia
- Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome
Electrophysiology Diagnostic & Treatment Services
Our lab provides 24-hour monitoring to diagnose and monitor arrhythmias. Most people have excellent outcomes through a range of advanced treatment options.
Our electrophysiology test services include these and others:
- Biventricular pacing, a type of pacemaker that keeps the two lower heart chambers pumping blood in sync (for advanced heart failure)
- Catheter ablation, a non-surgical procedure in which doctors deliver radiofrequency energy to abnormal areas of the heart to control or cure a variety of abnormal heartbeats
- Defibrillator and permanent pacemaker implantation
- Intensive electrophysiologic (EP) evaluation to diagnose both clinical tachyarrhythmias (rapid heartbeats) and bradyarrhythmias (slow heartbeats) and test the effectiveness of medications
- Outpatient arrhythmia management for even the most complex arrhythmias
- Syncope (fainting) clinic with a special focus on treating unexplained syncope
- Transvenous lead extraction — using techniques that include laser sheaths — to remove scarred-over pacemaker and defibrillator wires from the heart
In our Cardiac Monitoring Lab, our specialists work together to offer you these services:
- Monitor arrhythmias.
- Identify your risk of complications.
- Determine how well treatments are working.
The lab offers electrocardiogram (ECG) tests. Board-certified electrophysiologists analyze all ECG data and send the results to your referring doctor.
