Supporting Your Thyroid and Parathyroid Health

At Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC), we provide expert care for all thyroid and parathyroid conditions. Our Thyroid Center offers comprehensive services, from diagnosis to treatment, ensuring you receive personalized, compassionate care.

Understanding the Thyroid Gland

The thyroid gland is a small, butterfly-shaped organ in your neck. It makes hormones that control how your body uses energy. The parathyroid glands, located behind the thyroid, help control the amount of calcium in your blood and bones. Both are very important for your overall health.

Thyroid Disorders

At BIDMC, our expert endocrinologists care for all thyroid and parathyroid conditions. These conditions can cause a range of symptoms if your body has too much or too little of certain hormones. Some symptoms may include weight changes, feeling very tired, vision problems or changes in heart rate.

Common Thyroid Conditions

  • Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid): This means your thyroid makes too much hormone, which can speed up your metabolism.
  • Thyroid nodules: These are lumps that can form in the thyroid gland. They are usually not cancer.
  • Graves' disease: An autoimmune disease that causes hyperthyroidism.
  • Multinodular goiter: An enlarged thyroid with multiple nodules.
  • Hyperparathyroidism: When the parathyroid glands make too much hormone, causing high calcium levels.

Our Thyroid Nodule Clinic offers specialized care for thyroid nodules. We provide diagnostic evaluations and treatments, both medical and surgical.

We also care for autoimmune diseases like Hashimoto's disease. For more information, visit our rheumatology and immunology services.
