Understanding Your Fertility with HSG

A hysterosalpingogram (HSG) is a special test that looks at a person's uterus and fallopian tubes. It helps doctors find out why you may have trouble getting pregnant. At the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC), we care about your health and want to help you understand this important test.

What is an HSG test?

The HSG test uses X-ray images to see inside your uterus and fallopian tubes. During the HSG procedure, a dye is put into your uterus through a thin tube. This dye makes it easier to see any problems on the X-ray images.

Test Results & Next Steps

Your test results will be available shortly after the procedure. The radiologist will review the X-ray images and send a report to your doctor. Based on your results, your doctor will discuss the next steps after the HSG test with you. This may include further testing or starting a treatment plan to address any issues found.

Why Have an HSG?

An HSG test helps diagnose problems that may cause infertility. By checking for blockages or other issues in your fallopian tubes and uterus, we can better understand your fertility health and plan effective treatments.

Comfort & Safety

At BIDMC, your comfort and safety are our top priorities. The HSG scan is usually done without anesthesia, but you can talk to your doctor if you have concerns about pain or discomfort.
