Thyroid & Parathyroid Scans
Caring for your thyroid and parathyroid health
Expert Care, Personalized Treatment
At the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC), we care for your thyroid and parathyroid health. Imaging scans help diagnose or rule out conditions in these glands. You might need a scan after a blood test or if you have certain symptoms. Our team offers comprehensive care from diagnosis to treatment.
Thyroid & Parathyroid Ultrasound
We use small parts ultrasound to check your thyroid and parathyroid glands. If needed, we perform ultrasound- and CT-guided fine needle aspiration biopsies. Our imaging services provide accurate and timely results, thanks to our expert on-site cytopathologists. Based on your results, you might need specialized genetic testing to plan your treatment.
Nuclear Medicine
Nuclear medicine tests measure thyroid function and help diagnose conditions like benign and malignant tumors. We use advanced nuclear medicine technology to ensure precise results.
Choosing our American College of Radiology-accredited facility ensures you receive top-quality care.
More About Thyroid & Parathyroid Scans
What is a Parathyroid Scan?
This scan helps find issues with your parathyroid glands. It uses a small amount of radioactive material to show gland function. This is crucial for diagnosing and treating parathyroid conditions.
How Long Does a Parathyroid Scan Take?
The scan usually takes about 2 to 2.5 hours.
How Can I Prepare for a Parathyroid Scan?
You might need to stop certain medications before the scan. Follow your doctor's instructions.
What Happens During the Scan?
A small amount of radioactive material is injected. Images are taken at different times to assess your glands.
What is a Thyroid Scan and Uptake?
This test measures how well your thyroid is working. This is done by swallowing an iodine capsule and measuring the amount of iodine is in your thyroid. We also scan your thyroid to assess how it looks. This helps diagnose thyroid conditions.
How Long Does a Thyroid Scan Take?
The test will be done on two separate days. You'll take a small dose of radioactive iodine on the first day and this appointment will take about 15 minutes. You'll have scans the next day and this appointment will take about one hour.
How Can I Prepare for a Thyroid Scan?
You may need to avoid certain foods and medicines before the test. Follow your doctor's instructions.
What Happens During the Scan?
You'll lie on a table while a special camera takes images of your thyroid. Then a "counting device" placed in front of your neck will measure the amount of iodine in your thyroid.
