Breast Imaging Care, Research & Education

Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) is a busy Level-I Trauma Center and a major teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School. BIDMC is also a major New England referral center for breast oncology cases. In addition to our care services, we also offer numerous education and research opportunities to future leaders in radiology.

Care & Services

Our main Boston outpatient campus performs over 10,000 screening mammograms, 8,500 diagnostic mammograms, 4,500 ultrasounds and 1,000 MRIs each year. Cases are referred from five of our offsite campuses that perform over 25,000 additional examinations annually.

We also work closely with BIDMC’s active breast surgery, medical oncology, radiation oncology and pathology services. Among our facilities are:

  • Five digital mammogram units including three with tomosynthesis
  • Four state-of-the-art US systems
  • T and 1.5 T MRI units with biopsy capabilities
  • Dedicated prone 2D/3Dand upright 2D/3D stereotactic core biopsy systems
  • Three nine-gauge vacuum-assisted core biopsy devices

BIDMC’s Breast Imaging division is also one of the only practices in Boston that offers contrast-enhanced mammography.

Education & Training

We are at the forefront of training the next generation of breast imaging specialists. Our Breast MRI Fellowship offers medical students and qualified physicians extensive opportunities to deepen their experience in clinical care, research and teaching. We help prepare you for an academic career in breast imaging or a career in private clinical practice.
