Conditions We Treat

Our specialists treat the full range of urogynecologic conditions:

  • Pelvic organ prolapse, when organs in the pelvic cavity slip out of place and descend into the vaginal canal
  • Urinary incontinence (involuntary urine loss), including:
    • Stress incontinence (urine leakage associated with activity, such as coughing or sneezing)
    • Urge incontinence (urine leakage associated with urge)
    • Fecal incontinence (loss of bowel control), often as a result of pelvic floor injury
  • Genito-urinary fistulas, which can be either an abnormal connection between the vagina and the urinary tract (a vesico-vaginal fistula) or an abnormal connection between the vagina and the rectum (a rectovaginal fistula)
  • Complications from prior surgery
  • Vaginal atrophy or Genitourinary syndrome of menopause
  • Vaginal mesh exposure and removal
  • Hematuria evaluation, or blood in the urine
  • Documented recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs)

More About Urogynecology

Urogynecology and Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery (URPS) is a subspecialty within obstetrics and gynecology.  Our urogynecologists are highly trained doctors who provide expert care. 

After graduating from medical school, urogynecologists complete a four-year residency in obstetrics and gynecology. Next, they complete an additional three-year exclusively training in Urogynecology & Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery gaining tremendous experience in diagnosing and treating pelvic floor conditions. 

Urogynecologists help diagnose your pelvic floor conditions and work with you to develop a therapeutic plan including both surgical and non-surgical treatments. At times, a multidisciplinary approach is needed. 

Urogynecologists frequently partner with other colleagues at BIDMC from clinical services such as Gastroenterology, Urology, Colorectal Surgery, Radiology and Pelvic physical therapy to ensure you get the exact care you need.

Your First Urogynecology Visit

Please call 617-667-4070 to request your first appointment with the Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery team at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC).

If you are already a patient, please use the patient portal to request your next appointment.

Appointment requests are for non-urgent concerns. If you have an urgent medical concern, call 911.

Prior to your visit, you’ll receive a new patient questionnaire. Please fill this out before to your first appointment with our office. This will help us better understand your symptoms and make sure that your time with us is as productive as possible.

If you were previously evaluated or treated for any pelvic floor disorder, bring a copy of your medical records. This includes test results and operative reports. If you have previous medical records from other hospitals or providers and would like us to request them, please fill out a record release form. You can fax or mail it to us as soon as possible. Please note it can take a few weeks for medical records to reach our office.

Expect your first visit to last about 40 minutes.

Urogynecology Evaluation & Testing

Our team offers the latest testing options for urogynecologic conditions. This includes urogynamic and other minimally invasive testing.

Comprehensive Urogynecologic Treatments

Your care team will customize your plan according to your condition, symptoms, health history and preferences. Depending on your needs, we may recommend some combination of these steps:

  • Pelvic floor physical therapy with or without biofeedback
  • Pessary care (small block that supports the uterus)
  • Medications
  • Injections such as:
    • Intravesical Botox
    • Urethral bulking injections
  • Minimally invasive procedures such as:
    • Tibial neuromodulation (stimulates nerves to treat overactive bladder)
    • Sacral neuromodulation (stimulates nerves to help improve your bladder or bowel control)
  • Surgery
