3D Mammogram (Tomosynthesis)

Advanced breast imaging with 3D technology

Better Breast Imaging for Clearer Results

At Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC), we are committed to providing high-quality breast care using the most advanced imaging technologies available. Our 3D mammography system takes detailed images of breast tissue using a technology called digital breast tomosynthesis. These clear images can help find breast cancer earlier, even in women who have dense breast tissue.

What Is 3D Mammography?

3D mammography, also called digital breast tomosynthesis, is a more advanced type of mammogram. It takes many pictures of the breast from different angles. A computer then puts these images together into thin slices, or layers. This lets radiologists examine the breast tissue one layer at a time instead of seeing it as a single flat image.

Benefits include:

  • Clearer Images: Provides more detailed visualization of breast tissue
  • Improved Cancer Detection: Increases the chance of finding cancers earlier, when treatment is most effective
  • Fewer Call-backs: Reduces the need for additional imaging due to overlapping tissue
  • Comparable Radiation Dose: Modern 3D mammography uses a radiation dose similar to standard digital mammography

How 3D Mammography Works

During the exam, the mammogram machine moves in a gentle arc over the breast while taking several low-dose X-ray pictures. A computer then combines these images to create a 3D view of the breast. Looking at the breast in thin layers helps doctors find small changes that might be harder to see on a regular 2D mammogram.

What To Expect With Your 3D Mammogram

When you arrive for your mammogram, a technologist will explain the process and help you get into position at the machine. Your breast will be placed on a platform and gently compressed for a few seconds to get clear images. Compression helps create the best image while using the lowest amount of radiation possible. The entire appointment usually takes about 15 to 20 minutes.
