Our team is dedicated to making you feel comfortable and informed throughout the process.

What Is a Breast Ultrasound?

A breast ultrasound, also known as breast ultrasonography, is an imaging test that uses sound waves to create pictures of the inside of the breast. This test can help detect and evaluate breast lumps or tumors. Your doctor might recommend a breast ultrasound if:

  • You have a breast lump or other symptoms
  • You need further evaluation of dense breast tissue
  • Your mammogram shows something unusual
  • You have a high risk of breast cancer

More About Breast Ultrasound

How To Prepare for a Breast Ultrasound

There isn’t much preparation involved before your breast ultrasound. Wear comfortable clothes and avoid using lotion or powder on your chest. If you have previous breast images, share them with us for comparison. For more details, please review our guidance on what you can expect during your first appointment.

Does Insurance Cover Breast Ultrasound?

Many insurance plans cover breast ultrasound, especially if it's medically necessary. Check with your provider to understand your coverage. For more information, learn about our billing and financial services.

What To Expect During a Breast Ultrasound

During the test, you will lie on your back or side. A technician will put a special gel on your breast to help the sound waves travel. They will move a small device, called a transducer, over your skin to create images.

How Long Does a Breast Ultrasound Take?

The test usually takes about 30 minutes and is painless. After the test, you can go back to your normal activities.

Breast Ultrasound Results

After the ultrasound, your doctor will review the images and discuss the results with you. Test results may also be available in your patient portal.

Follow-Up Care

If the ultrasound detects something unusual, you might need more tests like a mammogram or a breast biopsy. BIDMC offers ultrasound-guided core breast biopsy and breast cyst fine needle aspiration to get more information if needed.

Depending on your results, your care plan might include:

  • Regular follow-up ultrasounds to monitor changes
  • Additional imaging tests like mammograms
  • Consultations with our breast health specialists
