Contrast-Enhanced Mammogram
Enhanced breast cancer screening with advanced imaging
Clearer Imaging for Better Detection
At Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC), we provide advanced mammography services to support your breast health. One of these services is contrast-enhanced mammography (CEM). This test helps doctors see breast tissue more clearly and can find cancer earlier than a standard mammogram.
What is a Contrast-Enhanced Mammogram?
A contrast-enhanced mammogram is a specialized breast X-ray. It uses a contrast dye to highlight areas of concern. This technology helps identify cancers that may not appear on a conventional mammogram.
Radiation dose: Contrast-enhanced mammography may use slightly more radiation than 3D mammography, but it is still well within safety standards. This small increase allows doctors to see more detail, which can be especially helpful for women who need a closer look at their breast tissue.
How to Prepare
- Schedule your appointment at BIDMC.
- Wear comfortable, two-piece clothing so only your top needs to be removed.
- Avoid deodorants, powders, or lotions on the day of your mammogram.
- You will receive an injection of contrast dye via an IV. Most patients experience no side effects, though some may feel warmth or flushing.
- If you have allergies or a history of reactions to contrast dye, notify your doctor prior to the procedure.
What to Expect
You will stand in front of the mammogram machine while your breast is gently compressed for a few seconds. The procedure is similar to a standard mammogram and usually takes 15–20 minutes. After the test, you can return to your normal activities immediately.
Billing and Insurance
Contrast-enhanced mammograms are often covered by insurance, but coverage can vary. We recommend checking your benefits with your insurance provider ahead of time. If you need help, please contact our billing and financial services team.
