What Is a Breast MRI?
A breast MRI is an imaging test that uses magnets and radio waves to create detailed pictures of the inside of your breast. It is often used to get a closer look at abnormal areas found during a mammogram or ultrasound.
Your doctor might recommend a breast MRI if:
- You have a high risk of breast cancer due to family history or genetic factors.
- Your mammogram or ultrasound showed abnormal results.
- You have dense breast tissue that makes other tests less accurate.
- You need a better assessment of the size and spread of breast cancer.
More About Breast MRI
Preparing for your breast MRI is simple. Wear comfortable clothing that doesn't contain metal. Leave jewelry and other metal accessories at home. Eat and drink normally and take your usual medications unless your doctor advises otherwise. Arrive early to complete any necessary paperwork. Remember to bring any previous breast images for comparison. For more details, please review our guidance on what you can expect during your first appointment.
Does Insurance Cover Breast MRI?
Many insurance plans cover breast MRI, especially if it's medically necessary. Check with your provider to understand your coverage. For more information, learn about our billing and financial services.
During the MRI, you will lie face down on a special table that slides into the MRI machine. You’ll need to stay still while the machine takes images. The machine makes loud thumping noises, so you’ll be able to wear earplugs or headphones to block the sound. The technician will still be able to see and talk to you during the test.
How Long Does a Breast MRI Take?
A breast MRI usually takes about 30-60 minutes. Sometimes, a contrast dye is used to get clearer images.
After your breast MRI, a radiologist will review the images. The results are usually available within a few days and will be sent to your doctor and uploaded to your patient portal. Your doctor will discuss the results with you and explain any next steps
Abnormal Breast MRI
If your breast MRI shows abnormal results, your doctor may recommend further tests, such as a breast biopsy. We offer MRI-guided breast biopsy for precise and accurate sampling.
Follow-Up Care
Based on your MRI results, your doctor will guide you on any follow-up care needed, including more imaging tests or starting a treatment plan. Our Breast Cancer Program provides comprehensive support and treatment options.
