Pathology Education & Training
Pathology Training at BIDMC
The Department of Pathology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC), a major teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School, is committed to providing state-of-the-art training to prepare physicians and scientists for leadership roles in pathology and academic medicine.
Given our close proximity to Harvard Medical School’s Longwood Campus, collaborative spirit among world-renowned clinicians, and access to extensive NIH funding, our trainees and researchers are well-positioned to become academic, research and clinical leaders in their own right.
Pathology Grand Rounds, Conferences & Lectures
Seminar Series
This seminar series features scientists from around the world presenting their latest research findings, which generally reflect the research interests of our department (including cancer biology and angiogenesis). Graduate students and postdoctoral fellows usually have the opportunity to meet with speakers during department-sponsored lunches.
The seminar series takes place on Fridays at 1:30 pm in the Research North first floor conference room.
Data Club
The weekly Data Club is an opportunity for postdoctoral fellows and graduate students to present their research findings to faculty and peers. All Experimental Pathology trainees are required to attend and present.
We typically feature two presentations per week, each one limited to roughly 20 minutes to leave time for questions and group discussion.
Data Club is held weekly from 10:00 am to 11:00 am every Tuesday in the First Floor Research North Conference Room.
Our Pathology Grand Rounds are held at noon on one Thursday every month from September through May in the Goldman Conference Room. We cover a range of topics aimed at audiences beyond our departmental research seminar series.
Pathology-specific morbidity and mortality conferences aim to transform our thinking about adverse events into sources of learning, improvement and increased patient safety. We use this as a chance to examine our processes, explore root causes and discuss improvement opportunities.
Our chief priority is to improve transparency and encourage systematic thinking on adverse events and near misses. It also helps initiate quality improvement or workflow redesign projects to create a better system for delivering better patient outcomes.
We hold this conference on the third Friday of the month, from September through May. It has been approved for CME I credit.
We offer numerous conferences and lectures designed specifically for our pathology residents, each focusing on one of our core subspecialties. These include events in anatomic pathology, clinical pathology and more.
