Referring Providers
BIDMC welcomes physician referrals and the opportunity to provide excellent care for your patients.
The Division of Clinical Pathology, which includes Laboratory and Transfusion Medicine, is comprised of over 80 faculty members who actively participate in the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) mission of clinical excellence, research and education. Faculty members oversee a broad range of clinical testing sections that include Clinical Chemistry, Clinical Microbiology, Cytogenetics and Genomics, Flow Cytometry, Hematology/coagulation, Hematopathology, HLA, Molecular and Precision Diagnostics, Point of Care testing, and Transfusion Medicine. In addition, our faculty are at the cutting edge of discoveries in clinical pathology, enabling our physician colleagues to provide the most advanced, comprehensive set of treatment options to patients.
The laboratories are state of the art provide testing, and the division provides consultative services for BIDMC and affiliated BILH network hospitals. The laboratories are CLIA approved and accredited by the College of American Pathologists (CAP), the Association for the Advancement of Blood and Biotherapies (AABB), and the American Society for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ASHI). Overall, our laboratories perform over 8 million tests annually and we employ more than 450 laboratory professionals.
We provide a wide range of pathology services and procedures in our state-of-the-art laboratories.
Clinical chemistry is a comprehensive laboratory, performing well over 100 different assays. The scope of activities include:
Clinical Microbiology provides a broad array of diagnostic tests used for the diagnosis of infections by bacteria, viruses and parasites. The full-service laboratory manages:
The Cytogenetics Laboratory provides chromosome analysis, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and oligo-SNP chromosomal microarray for constitutional disorders and acquired neoplastic disorders. In addition, the laboratory can establish cell cultures to be sent out for molecular testing.
The Cytogenetics Laboratory also performs chromosome breakage analysis for Fanconi Anemia. For providers within the BILH network, please find additional information about this service in the Epic procedure catalog. For providers outside the BILH network, please refer to the links below to access additional information about sample submission and the test requisition.

The Histocompatibility/Immunogenetics laboratory is responsible for histocompatibility testing for solid organ transplant recipients and their donors. Current transplant programs this laboratory supports include cardiac, kidney/pancreas, and liver transplant.
Additionally, the laboratory is responsible for histocompatibility testing of hematology/oncology patients required to manage platelet transfusion refractoriness. Other test offerings include disease association HLA testing (e.g., B27 for ankylosing spondylitis).
We offer state-of-the-art Flow Cytometry at BIDMC. The technology aids in the diagnosis and monitoring of acute leukemia, lymphoma, and many other hematologic disorders as well as immune cell monitoring in patients with suppressed immune systems. Availability of on-site testing allows rapid and more comprehensive testing, reducing turnaround time and facilitating seamless patient management.
The Hematology Laboratory is a full-service laboratory that performs:
The blood bank and Transfusion Medicine service provide routine and extended diagnostic testing for the varied and complex patient population cared for by BIDMC clinicians. Our faculty are available 24/7 to provide clinical consultations for transfusion management of transplant, trauma, neonatal, and obstetrical patients. The blood bank maintains a robust inventory of blood products, including:
We are committed to equipping the next generation of clinical pathologists with the tools they need to provide high-quality, compassionate care to their patients. Our education and training opportunities include electives, residencies and fellowships.
Our research team is at the leading edge of discoveries in clinical pathology, enabling our physicians to provide the most advanced, comprehensive set of treatment options to patients.
