The Division of Thoracic Surgery and Interventional Pulmonology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) is comprised of highly skilled, board-certified physicians, fellows and residents, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, registered nurses and support staff. We work together as a team to provide patients with the best possible care.
We offer research and medical education opportunities as well to advance the fields of thoracic surgery, interventional pulmonology and chest disease medicine.

Chest Disease Center
The Chest Disease Center at BIDMC is one of only a few institutions that brings together thoracic surgeons and interventional pulmonologists within one division, recognizing that a multidisciplinary approach improves the care and outcomes of our patients.

Benign Esophageal Disease Program
Our specialists in the Division of Thoracic Surgery and Interventional Pulmonology specialize in the treatment of patients with benign esophageal diseases. This includes patients with achalasia, hiatal hernia and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), among others. In most cases the laparoscopic approach is used, which results in less pain and scaring and a shorter recovery time.
Complex Airway Program
The Complex Airway Program is a regional and national referral center providing comprehensive, multidisciplinary care for patients with a range of malignant and benign airway disorders.
We have particular expertise in the endoscopic and surgical management of complex benign airway disorders such as tracheal and bronchial stenosis.
Tracheobronchomalacia (TBM) Program
Normally the central airways (the trachea and bronchi) remain open when you breathe. With tracheobronchomalacia (TBM), the airways become weak and floppy, tending to collapse with breathing. TBM is a rare condition and is often misdiagnosed. We are among the world leaders in treating TBM.
COPD Clinic
The COPD and Emphysema Clinic is a leader in multidisciplinary treatment of lung diseases, offering promising new treatments for those with advanced COPD and emphysema.
Lung, Thoracic & Esophageal Cancer Care
Patients with lung or esophageal cancer require care by experts across a variety of surgical and medical specialties. Our thoracic surgeons work together with interventional pulmonologists and oncologists to develop an individualized care plan that offers you the best possible outcome.
Pleural Disease Airway Program
The Pleural Disease Airway Program is a specialized multidisciplinary service for the evaluation and treatment of patients with diseases that affect the linings around the lungs.

We offer highly qualified physicians and medical students a range of education and training opportunities, including our cardiothoracic surgery residency program and interventional pulmonology fellowship.
