Maternal Mental Health & Substance Use

Care for prenatal depression, anxiety and more

Mental Health Support During Pregnancy

Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) provides complete prenatal care for pregnant moms and babies. Our maternal-fetal medicine (MFM) team provides top-level care for high-risk pregnancies, including care for moms who have mental health or substance use conditions.

Preexisting mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, substance abuse or eating disorders may pose unique challenges during pregnancy. Our team of caring experts can help improve your wellness during and after pregnancy.

Preconception Planning

Whenever possible, we encourage you to begin planning with your medical team before you conceive. Preconception planning allows you to optimize your health and prepare to manage pregnancy changes safely. Ideally, your care team will start any needed medications (or dosage changes) before or early in your pregnancy.

Conditions We Treat

Preexisting mental health conditions that can affect pregnancy include these and others:

  • Anxiety
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Depression
  • Eating disorders

Our team also provides comprehensive support for those who need postpartum mental health support after delivery.

All of our maternal-fetal medicine (MFM) specialists are experts in taking care of those with complicated medical conditions before and during pregnancy. Together with our multidisciplinary clinic partners, we coordinate care with your primary obstetrician to provide the highest level of care for you and your baby.
