Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery Care, Education & Research
The Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) offers surgery aimed at enhancing both function and appearance, using advanced surgical techniques. Our skilled surgeons, who are board-certified and highly experienced, provide a full spectrum of plastic and reconstructive procedures and services.
Surgical procedures include:
- reconstructive surgery for trauma or cancer patients -breast reconstruction
- abdominal wall reconstruction and hernia repair -microsurgery
- hand surgery
- upper and lower extremity reconstruction
- aesthetic (cosmetic) surgery.
The Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery works to improve patient outcomes and advance the field of plastic and reconstructive surgery through research initiatives. We also educate and train the next generation of plastic and reconstructive surgeons through a variety of fellowships and programs.

Cosmetic Surgical Care
Using the latest techniques, our experienced, board-certified plastic surgeons provide a wide variety of cosmetic surgery and aesthetic services for both men and women, including:

Cancer Treatment & Recovery
The Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and Division of Surgical Oncology work closely to provide advanced services for cancer care, including Mohs surgery for skin cancer.
Head & Neck Reconstructive Care
The head and neck surgery service at BIDMC's Otolaryngology Department provides a multidisciplinary approach to treatment for patients with malignant (cancerous) and non-malignant conditions of the head and neck. The team also provides functional rhinoplasty and oral reconstructive and cosmetic surgery in conjunction with the Division of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery.
Lymphatic Surgical Care
The Boston Lymphatic Center at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center provides compassionate care and advocacy for individuals with lymphatic disorders, including lymphatic surgery, while uniting health care providers and researchers from all disciplines to advance our knowledge of lymphatic disease and therapy.
BIDMC is one of the few hospitals in the nation to offer innovative surgical techniques for the management of lymphedema, such as lymph node transplantation and lymphovenous bypass.
Peripheral Nerve Injury & Restoration Surgical Care
We provide exceptional, multidisciplinary care for patients with autonomic peripheral nerve disorders, prioritizing patient-centricity and supported by leading-edge education and research.
Upper & Lower Extremity, Hand & Limb Preservation
We collaborate closely with colleagues in the Division of Orthopedic Surgery to offer thorough care for patients dealing with hand, wrist and elbow injuries and conditions.
From diabetic foot and leg care to foot and ankle surgery and limb preservation/amputation, our expertise covers a wide range of conditions and procedures. These include:
- Arthritis
- Carpal tunnel syndrome
- Tendinitis
- Fractures and dislocations
- Dupuytren’s contracture
- Ligament sprains and strains
- Traumatic injuries necessitating reconstructive microsurgery and replantation of the upper extremities

Clinical Expertise & Multidisciplinary Collaboration
Our multidisciplinary approach to care ensures that our patients have the best opportunity for a successful outcome – regardless of the type of procedure.
In emergency situations, BIDMC patients benefit from a close collaboration among our renowned specialists in traumatic injury care, emergency medicine and acute trauma and surgical critical care.
In situations involving the skin, we work closely with dermatology for reconstructive procedures and cancer treatments, such as Mohs surgery. We also collaborate with the Division of General Surgery and the Surgery Division with hernia repairs and body lift procedures and/or the removal of excess skin following weight loss from bariatric surgery.
We also work closely with the rehabilitation and social work teams to ensure a positive experience from start to finish.
Education & Training
The Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery educates and trains the next generation of plastic and reconstructive surgeons. We offer a three-year independent training program and a six-year integrated training program. Our fellowships include:

- Lymphatic Surgery
- Reconstructive Microsurgery
We also offer internship opportunities for students.
Research
Our plastic and reconstructive surgery research team conducts basic science and clinical research. Through leading-edge technology and research, our team works to improve patient outcomes and advance the field of plastic and reconstructive surgery.
