Expert surgical treatments for the circulatory system

Comprehensive Surgical Care for Veins, Arteries and Blood Vessels

The Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery provides comprehensive care for disorders of the circulatory system. We are leaders in the development and use of endovascular procedures.

Understanding Vascular and Endovascular Procedures

Vascular and endovascular surgery is comprehensive surgical care for all conditions that affect these parts of the circulatory system:

  • Veins
  • Arteries
  • Blood vessels

Many people can have less invasive treatment of vascular disease through minimally invasive endovascular surgery. Compared to traditional, open surgery, endovascular surgery allows you to heal more quickly and return to your normal activities sooner.

Conditions We Treat

BIDMC's skilled vascular surgeons are pioneers in the field. We offer surgery to treat a full range of vascular conditions:

  • Thoracic outlet syndrome
  • Veins

More About Vascular & Endovascular Surgery

Personalized Treatment Planning

All treatments in the Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery begin with personalized assessments and evaluation by a multidisciplinary team of caregivers. In most cases, your care team will try less invasive treatment options before recommending surgery.

If your care team determines that you need surgery, we provide both conventional, open surgeries and minimally invasive endovascular techniques. We evaluate and treat with the procedure that is safest and most appropriate for your specific vascular condition and overall health.

Vascular & Endovascular Procedures We Offer

We offer these and other procedures:

Aortic Aneurysm Repair
Vein Care Treatments

Surgical care for varicose and spider veins, including these minimally invasive treatments:

Limb Preservation Surgery

We offer a number of treatments to save limbs, including surgical bypass and comprehensive care for diabetic foot ulcers and diabetes-related circulatory problems. See the Limb Preservation Center for more information

Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) Treatment

We have a high rate of success in saving the limbs of those compromised by severe PAD. When needed, we work with our colleagues in plastic and reconstructive surgery. Our expertise and high-volume program offer you a number of advantages:

  • Avoid amputations
  • Regain mobility
  • Return to your daily routines

We are one of the most active centers of lower extremity revascularization for treatment of PAD anywhere. Our surgeons are skilled in performing these and other minimally invasive, open and/or hybrid procedures:

  • Angioplasty
  • Stenting
  • Thrombolysis
  • Atherectomy
  • Surgical bypass
  • Endarterectomy
  • Thrombectomy
Surgical Treatment for Carotid Artery Disease (CAD)

CAD develops when atherosclerosis (plaque buildup) narrows and blocks the neck’s major arteries. These arteries deliver oxygen to the brain. Treating carotid artery disease can help prevent strokes.

Our surgeons have extensive experience in treating carotid artery disease with these procedures:

  • Open carotid endarterectomy surgery removes plaque blocking the carotid arteries
  • Endovascular carotid angioplasty and stenting as a minimally invasive, catheter-based procedure to flatten plaque against your artery walls and implant a stent to keep the artery open
Thoracic Outlet Syndrome Decompression

We offer surgery to release pressure between the neck and shoulder muscles and the first rib and collarbone.

Vascular & Endovascular Surgery Clinical Trials

We participate in numerous clinical trials and registries that track the results of carotid stenting. These opportunities provide you with access to the latest and emerging treatment options sooner than at many other centers.
