Geriatric Emergency Medicine for Seniors

Geriatric Emergency Medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center is committed to supporting the compassionate, timely, and individualized care of older adults, promoting well-being and patient-centered outcomes during emergency care.

Geriatric-Friendly Emergency Department

Our team is trained to care for seniors and focus on their comfort and safety. We know that older adults may need different treatments and a gentler approach. We take the time to listen and understand your concerns.

Our ED is designed to be calm and quiet. This helps reduce stress and confusion. We have special equipment and furniture to make sure you are as comfortable as possible. Our goal is to make your visit as smooth as it can be.

Optimizing Care for Geriatric Patients

Providing emergency care that recognizes and addresses the multifaceted needs of older adults, including managing complex medical conditions, cognitive impairment, polypharmacy, and functional limitations.

Prevention and Early Intervention

Implementing proactive measures to prevent and mitigate common geriatric emergencies, such as falls, delirium, medication-related issues, and elder abuse.

Advancing Research and Innovation

Engaging in research endeavors to identify evidence-based practices, develop innovative approaches, and enhance outcomes for older adults in emergency care. This includes investigations into geriatric screening tools, interventions to mitigate adverse events, and initiatives to improve transitions of care for older patients transitioning from the emergency department.

Enhancing Communication and Coordination

Enhancing effective communication and collaboration between ED providers, patients, and collaborating services to facilitate care transitions.

Promoting Education and Training

Offering education and training opportunities for healthcare providers to enhance their competencies in geriatric emergency medicine, encompassing geriatric assessment techniques, communication skills with older adults and their families, and specialized management strategies.

Advancing the Practice through Research

As healthcare advances, the aging population surges. At BIDMC, we believe in aging-well and are committed to ensuring the best quality of life for our patients, regardless of their age. Our research is dedicated to uncovering new and better ways to treat this unique population and improve health outcomes overall.
