Autoinflammatory Diseases

Treatment for complex conditions affecting the immune system

Specialized Care for Autoinflammatory Diseases

The Autoinflammatory Disease Center at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) helps diagnose and treat adults with known or suspected autoinflammatory diseases. Our clinic is one of the few centers in the country that specializes in autoinflammatory disease care.

What Are Autoinflammatory Diseases?

Your immune system protects you from bacteria, infection and viruses. Autoinflammatory diseases affect the immune system by causing it to mistakenly attack itself. These conditions are also known as periodic fever syndromes. During a fever episode, you may develop rashes or pain in your abdomen, chest, joints or muscles.

Most autoinflammatory diseases are inherited and start in childhood. Multiple family members may have the same disease. Other autoinflammatory diseases may be caused by environmental and genetic factors and appear later in life.
