Organ Donation

Lifesaving care is possible with your generosity

Give the Gift of Life

In a typical year, more than 100,000 people are waiting for an organ transplant in the United States. Their future depends on the generosity of others. Organ donation at the time of your death or the death of a loved one — or serving as a living donor — can give hope, healing and life.

The Transplant Institute at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) helps promote organ donation and provides high quality transplant services. With advances in science, medical care and medications — and the kindness of people like you — we are helping people who receive donated organs live longer, healthier and more satisfying lives.

Register as an Organ Donor

Organs that may be donated include the kidney, liver, pancreas and others. Corneas, bone marrow and blood are also needed. You can indicate your choice for organ and tissue donation when you apply for (or renew) your Massachusetts driver's license.

Become a Living Organ Donor

Donating an organ — whether to someone you know or a complete stranger — is a wonderful and courageous gift. Organ donation after death isn't your only option. In some cases, there are organs you can donate while you're still alive.

At BIDMC, you can donate a kidney through our Living Kidney Donation program. Through our Living Liver Donation program, you can donate a portion of your liver.

Our living donor team can help you understand the risks and benefits of each procedure. If you choose to be a living donor, the team will help manage your care and services, as well as providing support to you and your family.

Help Us Grow the Donor Community

At the Transplant Institute, we raise awareness of the benefits of organ donation and we encourage people to donate life. If you've received a transplant or been an organ donor, you can help. Once you've regained your health, let people know about your lifesaving experience. Your firsthand account may convince others to give the gift of life.

If you have a loved one waiting for a transplant, raise awareness in your neighborhood, community and state. Together, we can help people understand why organ donation is so important.
