Phototherapy (Light Therapy) for Skin Conditions

Effective treatment for psoriasis, inflammatory skin disorders, eczema and more

Leading-Edge Bright Light Therapy in Boston

Established in 1975, the Phototherapy Unit at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) was one of the first of its kind in the nation. We have treated thousands of people, participated in valuable research studies and contributed to substantial advances in our field. This experience means better care for you.

Conditions We Treat

  • Acne
  • Actinic keratoses
  • Cutaneous T-cell lymphoma
  • Eczema
  • Vitiligo

Treatments We Offer

The Phototherapy Unit offers ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) treatment for skin diseases. We use the most up-to-date technology at our facility, including narrow-band UVB.

We also offer:

  • Blue light photodynamic therapy (PDT). Used to treat actinic keratoses and acne. This is a field-treatment for precancerous UV-induced skin changes. PDT combines a topical photosensitizing porphyrin solution with visible blue light. This broadly treats the skin to prevent future development of squamous cell carcinoma.
  • XTRAC Laser. This produces a monochromatic wavelength (308nm) of ultraviolet light. The XTRAC Laser is effective and safe for treating many skin disorders, including psoriasis.

What to Expect During Photo Therapy

Treatment typically involves short exposure to UVB rays three to five times a week. Almost all skin conditions that respond to UVB light are chronic (long-term) conditions. Therefore, you will need ongoing treatment to continue seeing results.

Our expert team looks forward to helping you improve and control your skin disorder.
