Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology & Nutrition
The Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition, part of the Department of Medicine, offers world-class patient care, research programs, and education and training opportunities.
The Center for Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) is a leader in advancing the science and practice of IBD care. Our mission is to improve outcomes for people with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis through pioneering research, innovation in clinical practice and the training of future leaders in the field.
Our investigators are leaders in translational and clinical research, with internationally recognized expertise in therapeutic drug monitoring, women’s health across fertility, pregnancy and lactation, patient-reported outcomes and quality improvement.
Under the direction of Dr. Adam Cheifetz, our team was the first to demonstrate that proactive monitoring of infliximab concentrations and dose adjustment to a therapeutic window improves patient outcomes — work that helped establish therapeutic drug monitoring as a global standard of care in IBD. Today, our faculty continue to drive leading-edge research that is shaping new paradigms for patient care locally, nationally and worldwide.
Our multidisciplinary research programs span the full spectrum of discovery. In our laboratories and biobank, scientists are unraveling the role of the microbiome and immune pathways and identifying novel biomarkers that drive precision-based, personalized approaches to treatment. In our clinics, patients gain access to groundbreaking trials, innovative therapeutic monitoring strategies, specialized preventive care such as immunization programs for immunosuppressed individuals and expertise in complex areas of IBD management.
Importantly, many of our initiatives are shaped by patient-reported priorities, ensuring that our research agenda remains aligned with the needs of the IBD community and accelerates translation from discovery to practice.
