Referring Patients to BIDMC for Radiology Services
The Department of Radiology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) offers a complete array of radiologic programs and services. Available services include, but are not limited to:
- CT scan
- MRI scan
- PET/CT imaging
- SPECT/CT imaging
- Ultrasound
- X-Ray/Fluoroscopy
Scheduling a Patient Referral Appointment
To refer a patient for radiology services at BIDMC, please contact us at 617-754-9500.
IMPORTANT: If your patient has questions regarding a specific implant, please call 617-754-2084.
All referring physicians must:
- Provide information to the patient about the exam being ordered.
- Complete the necessary order for the exam: fax, mail, or place the order in our computer system.
- Order blood work and provide pre-medication criteria and prescriptions if necessary, depending on the exam.
Request Your Patient's Medical Images

Additional Radiology & Imaging Referral Information
At BIDMC, we offer dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) scans for bone density testing.
To request a bone density test for one of your patients, please:
- Print the Bone Density Requisition Form.
- Fill it out with your patient's information.
- Return by fax to 617-754-8630. Please do not include a cover sheet.

For BIDMC or affiliated physicians with access to web OMR, results will be communicated promptly. To order a screening:
- In Order Entry under Testing Services, go to the Radiology section.
- Select CT Lung Cancer Screening from the list.
- Double-check that you’ve selected the correct order to ensure proper setup for screening.

Reminder: The Smoking History tab in OMR now includes a pack-years calculator. To activate the calculator, you must first update the patient’s “Smoking Status.” If the patient meets the age and pack-years criteria, a reminder will appear on their front page.
To update smoking history:
- Select the appropriate Smoking Status (e.g., Former smoker if the patient has quit).
- Enter the year they quit and how many years it has been since.
- Enter the number of packs per day and total years smoked for current smokers.
- Be sure to complete all pack-per-day and years-smoked fields — this is essential for screening eligibility.
