Orthopedic, Spine & Sports Medicine Rehabilitation

Expert care to help you recover from musculoskeletal conditions, injuries and surgery

Orthopedic Therapy To Get You Back into Life

Muscles, tendons, ligaments, bones and joints are all parts of your musculoskeletal system. They have important roles in helping you move, do daily activities and take part in sports you enjoy. Unfortunately, any one of these body parts can be affected by disease or injury. In many cases, surgery is part of treatment.

Orthopedic, Spine and Sports Medicine Rehabilitation at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) is designed to help you recover from musculoskeletal conditions, injuries and surgery. Inpatient and outpatient services are available.

Our experienced occupational and physical therapists treat a wide range of orthopedic problems, sports injuries and back and neck pain. Whether you are recovering from joint replacement surgery, are a high-performance athlete or are affected by chronic lower back pain, our therapists can help.

Physical and occupational therapy are also essential parts of post-surgery care. They play a critical role in helping you reach your goals and get back to an active lifestyle.

More About Orthopedic, Spine & Sports Medicine

Inpatient Bone & Joint Rehabilitation

After you have surgery, you need help to get moving comfortably again. Our therapists are here for you.

Joint Replacement & Reconstruction Rehabilitation

Following surgery, therapists teach you exercises to improve your strength and range of motion. They also provide training to help you do things like walk again. To protect your joints, they also provide training in daily living activities, such as putting on your pants or socks while avoiding certain positions.

We provide instructions on caring for your joints. And before you leave the hospital, we teach you exercises to do at home as part of your follow-up therapy program.

Spinal Surgery

After spine surgery, you need to learn the proper way to do everyday activities so you can protect your spine. We teach you the best way to get in and out of bed, move while walking, bathe yourself and dress yourself.

If you have pain or weakness, we teach you how to use a cane or walker. We also teach you and your family members how to use a back brace if your doctor wants you to wear one.

Outpatient Sports Medicine & Injury Care

Our outpatient services get you the care you need without a hospital stay. Outpatient care may be effective for sports injuries, arthritis, back pain and more.

At your first visit, we conduct a complete evaluation. Part of the evaluation includes looking at how your problem is affecting your fitness or performance. We then create a personalized treatment plan for you. It's designed to help you achieve your goals for returning to sports, work or other activities.

Treatments we offer include:

  • Access to our state-of-the art rehab facility with treadmills, elliptical machines, bikes and weights
  • Changes in shoe wear, bracing, taping or assistive/adaptive equipment
  • Ergonomic improvements or changes to your training or practice regimen and schedule
  • Joint and soft tissue work to increase range of motion and freedom of movement
  • Methods to stretch your tissues, decrease pain and swelling, and promote healing, including ultrasound, electrical stimulation, heat and ice and cold compression pumps
  • Strengthening, flexibility and endurance exercises to improve movement
  • Workouts in our pool to recover from an orthopedic surgery, sports injury or back pain
Arthritis & Pain

Many conditions can cause significant pain. Osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and fibromyalgia are just a few of these. Our therapists can help you address your pain and live life to the fullest. In some cases, we may recommend starting your treatment in our therapeutic pool. Then we transition you to exercise on land.

Back & Spine Problems

Muscle strains, arthritis and lack of core muscle strength are some of the things that can cause back and spine issues. If you’re dealing with these issues, spine physical therapy can help. We create a personalized home exercise program for you.

Our therapists focus on managing and decreasing your pain.

Sports Injuries

Sports physical therapy can help you recover from sprains, strains, fractures, dislocations and injuries from sports or repetitive activities. If you’re a runner, our Chestnut Hill location offers a running clinic to help prevent and recover from injuries.

We also specialize in performing arts injuries. These injuries can occur after months or years of repeating highly skilled and precise movements. If you're a dancer or a musician, we pay careful attention to the specialized posture and form used to practice and perform.

Additional Services

Our therapists work closely with other specialists at BIDMC to deliver your care.
