Nutritional Counseling and Care

Inpatient & Outpatient Nutrition Services

The experts in Nutrition Services at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) can help you meet your nutrition needs. We can help you understand how what you eat and drink impacts your overall well-being. Let us help you feel your best by guiding you toward a healthy, well-balanced diet. You can access our services whether or not you are currently in the hospital.

Outpatient Appointments

We provide nutrition counseling in an outpatient setting. Our goal is to help patients understand how food and nutrition affect your health and well‑being. Nutrition counseling can help you maintain good health. If you currently have certain medical conditions, we’ll teach you how nutrition impacts those conditions.

Our registered dietitians (RDs) and nutrition support experts work with you, your family and your other health care providers with one goal in mind: to improve your overall health. Our medical nutrition therapy (MNT) service team can assess your body's nutritional needs and counsel you on how to meet those needs.

Preparing for Your Visits with Us

Your first outpatient visit with us lasts at least 30 minutes. During that visit, we’ll discuss your current eating habits. To prepare for this first visit, please write down any questions you may have for us. Your follow-up visits last at least 15 minutes. You and your dietitian will review your progress, discuss your concerns and address any issues.

Insurance Coverage for Outpatient Services

You may need a referral from your primary care doctor for your insurance to cover our nutrition services. Most managed care plans and insurance providers require it, so please check your plan’s requirements before scheduling your first visit with us. You may need to pay a copayment at the time of your visit.

Inpatient Nutrition Services

Inpatient care is when you stay in the hospital overnight. Many of our inpatient registered dietitians are also certified nutrition support clinicians (CNSCs). We work with physicians, nurses and pharmacists to care for patients when they need nutritional support. This includes patients who need tube feedings and intravenous (IV) nutrition.

Our dietitians work with patients in the hospital who have eating disorders, food allergies and other conditions. We also are available to education patients on any diet modifications that are necessary post discharge.

Home Parenteral Nutrition Services

Some patients need to get their nutrients through a vein, which is called total parenteral nutrition. Total parenteral nutrition or TPN can provide these nutrients to meet your body’s needs in order to support your growth and healing. TPN often starts during your hospital stay.

Dietitians specially trained in TPN and working with patients in the hospital and will coordinate with the rest of your health care team. We’ll make recommendations for starting and advancing TPN based on your unique nutritional needs.

When you go home, a home care company will provide the TPN formula. They also will help with venous access devices, such as IVs, and other services you may need. The Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) often assists during these visits.

The Home Nutrition Support Program provides supervision to patients who are on TPN in the home setting.  We will call you to discuss your care. Our goal is to provide you the best quality of life while you require TPN at home.
